Want to level up in your marketing game? You need to qualify first. If you’re trying to spend lots of money to make more money, stop for just a moment. Like in any game we play, we need practice, and we need to develop skills like logic, stamina, patience, humility, bravery, strength, and much more. You don’t jump into the MLB because you were great at catching a ball as a kid. You, my friend, are one among many aiming for the same spot on the playing field.
When it comes to marketing you have to beat your competitors. You need to stop hiding and put yourself out there. You need to stabilize your marketing budget and ensure it doesn’t tap out on useless paid ads – in other words, you need to monitor that ending balance like your business depended on it. And it probably does.
There’s too much to talk about to list all right here, right now. So, we will spare your eyes from burning after reading from a digital screen and talk about one thing that you need to recognize first and foremost. That is…
You’re going to be tested before you receive.
If you think this is sounding metaphysical, you’re not wrong, Walter. Truth is, it does come down to physics. When your mom told you to eat all your broccoli, she was being scientific and less of a nag than you thought. So cut her some slack, alright?
You’re not going to get stronger until you eat your darn broccoli! You may hate it, and it may be the hardest thing you’ve ever had to swallow, but you know deep down it’s good for you. So, eat it!
In this case, you’re going to be faced with signs delivered from the good universe and these signs are not to be dismissed and brushed off. They are literally the exact messages you need to level up in your game. Think of it like a video game. You’re usually prompted on what to do next. Some items will be lit up, encouraging you to pick it up, which has a note with a riddle on it for you to solve, and when you do, a magic door opens up entering you into the next realm. The universe doesn’t work much differently. It’s not as obvious as a lit-up object telling you, “Hey! Run this Google Ad, exactly the way we tell you on this piece of paper, mmkay?”
No. It’s going to give you a riddle. And it will not turn on a flashlight in a dark room guiding your way. However, it does indirectly guide you, but you have to be certain you’re aware of when it does. So, when something happens to you that sets you back, there’s usually a leveling-up prompt in there. What emotions do you feel and how can you grow from them?
For instance, let’s say you are used to playing small and hiding your true authentic self. Thinking about going on social media frightens you.
“What will they think?!”
“They’ll all laugh at me. The trolls will get to me.”
“No one is going to buy from a nerd like me.”
Well, if you get a sign from above and around you, it may be a trait you need to honor about yourself. In the example above, let’s say it’s as simple as posting a video on YouTube. You’ve always wanted to, but you’ve also been so afraid of putting yourself out into the world. So, you never do. Years go by. Now let’s press fast-forward and say you’re ready. You can’t stand not taking the next step and moving forward with your networking and marketing strategies. You’re sick and tired of feeling small and want to get confident as soon as possible and take back control. You’re ready to launch your YouTube channel.
Powerful stuff! Surely, you’ve even embodied the emotions and felt what it is like to be that confident version of yourself. That alone sends a signal to the universe that you’re asking for it. And they will bring you the sign to tell you how to get it. It may not be pretty and it more than likely will be challenging, like eating that broccoli you thought was so disgusting as a kid. Let’s say the sign is that you’re suddenly faced with some rare eczema flaring up on your face. Uh oh.
What do you do? Hide, duh. Wrong! This is your challenge to prove that you really are ready and ready right now, not when your eczema clears up. If you truly do want the success you know you’ll get from your YouTube channel, now is the time to prove to yourself that you already are that confident person. If you can show up with a skin problem and film yourself, then there is no better way to build confidence. That alone is enough to rewire your brain that you are no longer small. You are no longer a pushover. You can handle any trolling. And if you can survive that, you’ll tell your brain that no matter what, you’re safe. You can do this repeatedly, eczema or not.

For many, this seems like a stupid example. Who would care enough to not film with eczema? You would. If you’ve been battling with insecurities around how people will view you on film, then you bet you’d be scared to show your face.
It isn’t stupid. It’s very real. And you will receive signs that only matter to you. Not everyone needs to level up in this area, but each of us has something we keep from others. We have something that we suppress yet know if only we confronted the fear, we’d be better off and on the road to success in our businesses. Skin issues, admitting we’re broke, being ashamed of people-pleasing, you name it. Advancing is as simple as conquering what holds us back.
